He once shared with the media the story in 35 years ago. “One day in 1984 when I was in the USA, I got a call from a senior official of Vietnamese government and was invited to come back the motherland. The feeling of being over-joyed made me agree promptly as I was apart from my homeland so many years. At that moment, I was just thinking of visiting my country.

I had a chance to meet then-Prime Minister Pham Van Dong right after and was assigned an important mission that was to open international flights to Western countries.”

Mr. Johnathan Hanh Nguyen thought that he was too young to handle this mission at the age of 34 but at the same time, he was also proud of being trusted by then-Prime Minister and trying to convince himself that he could make it with all of his effort.

He also expressed “Another thing that urged me to take this mission was the desire to contribute to the development of the country from the moment I saw my country from the airplane. All I could see was only poverty left by the war. As I walked around, there were rarely any restaurants or stores and the whole city was in darkness from 6PM because the shortage of power. So, I knew that I got to do something to help building up the economy.”

One year later, he somewhat accomplished the mission. In September 4th 1985, the Vietnam – Philippines air route was officially confirmed by then-President Marcos. 5 days later, the first flight from Vietnam to Philippines went into operation, which paved the way for Vietnam to step out to the world.

In 1986, at the Sixth National Congress of the Communist Party, Vietnam has made an announcement to implement new renovations to the country. From my standpoint, opening a new flight route along with the country renovation implementation has opened numerous opportunities for Vietnam, which then was the beginning of obtaining succession of investments from around the world and proceeding to incorporation with international economy.”
